Kawasaki Heavy Industries C151 - Introduction
The Kawasaki Heavy Industries C151 trains are Singapore's 1st generation rolling stock for the North South Line & East West Line and it is the oldest rolling stock in the fleet of trains operated by SMRT. It had been in operation since 1987.

There are currently 66 sets of 6 cars each. All of the C151's 396 cars are built from 1986 to 1989 with no comparable differences by KHI and Nippon Sharyo, Tokyu Car Corp and Kinki Sharyo.

Between 2006 and 2008, the trains underwent a two and a half year mid-life refurbishment program with was done by Mitsui & Co, RM Transit Technology, Lexbuild and Rotem Company. It was completed on 2 January 2009 costing S$142.7 million.

Design
Exterior

The exterior colour of the train is black, with a wide red strip running down the middle, and grey for the bottom section, giving it a more modern look. The train run numbers are displayed with an illuminated roller blind display.
Interior

The colours of the seats maroon, blue and dark green.
Different Glass Panels

The first few refurbished C151 feature only one bracket for the side panels and the gangway area only equipped with 2 grab poles, instead of the typical 4.
Standing Space

20 trains had 14 seats from each car replaced with metal bars to serve as extra standing space.

They also come with more grab poles, wider seats; more standing space around the doors and a wheelchair area.
Additional Hooks

Additional hooks for handgrips are found in 075/076, the last train to be refurbished.
"Doors Closing" Warning Lights

Red LED lights that blink when doors are closing had been position at the top of the door.
Wheelchair Space

Found in 3rd and 4th car nearest to the lift.

Experimental Programmes
Additional Grab Poles and Handgrips

Additional grab poles and hand grips was trialed in Car 2105, as an effort by LTA to encourage more commuters to move towards the centre of the car.

Safety Systems
Equipped with Automatic Train Control (ATC), supplemented with Automatic train operation (ATO). At a fallback level, Automatic Train Protection (ATP) is available.

A typical peak period scenario in an MRT station includes heavy boarding and alighting activities, crowded trains despite decent frequencies, especially in interchange stations. Travel time is also usually longer than the what signboards in platforms stipulate given the huge crowd and other factors like train bunching.
